Mind in West Essex - Peer Support

Peer support happens when people who have had similar experiences of something difficult come together to support each other. MiWE specialise in experiences of mental health difficulties, trauma, or other forms of social or emotional distress. However, people involved in peer support will also have other shared characteristics, experiences, and interests. Peer support differs from other forms of mental health services and support in important ways.

Is your life at risk? In an emergency call 999 for an Ambulance, or call NHS 111 (Option 2).

If you are not in crisis we are here to help. The peer support service aims to provide support for those that are experiencing mild to moderate mental health challenges. We offer a low risk intervention which means it is not suitable for service users with current risks such as ongoing suicidal thoughts. This is because the knowledge and expertise needed to support service users through such scenarios generally goes beyond what peer support workers can offer. High-risk service users can also be triggering for peer support workers, and require support beyond a 9-session peer engagement. It is also important to note that the peer support service should not replace other mental health services and we do not offer clinical support. Having said that, we can work alongside other mental health care professionals.

Suitability may include those needing support with: motivation and self-belief; improving daily routine and activities; wellbeing; access to practical and financial support; access community, peer, and social groups/activities; clients who are willing to engage on an appointment basis. It is not suitable for those with suicidal thoughts (which go beyond fleeting), plans, or intention.
